Green Energy – Biomass Power Plant
In keeping with our commitment to sustainable development and responsible corporate citizenship, Tokyo Cement joined national and global intiatives to reduce carbon emissions by commissioning Sri Lanka's first biomass power plant.
The production of cement has been identified as a process which causes excessive amounts of carbon dioxide to be released into the atmosphere – a by-product of treating limestone during manufacture. Using alternative sources of energy that do not utilise fossil fuels such as biomass is the primary method of combating the emission of green house gases.
Tokyo Cement's 10 mega watt biomass plant produces energy via sustainable green energy sources such as paddy husk and fuel wood. The materials, which were selected on the basis of availability and ability to generate 3000 – 45000 kilocalories per kilogram when dry, are obtained in Sri Lanka's dry zone, particularly in the Eastern and North Central Provinces. These areas feature an abundance of rice mills and are ideal for growing Gliricidia Sepium, the tree legume from which fuel wood is obtained.
Tokyo Cement’s establishment of tree legume plantations positively impacts the environment by contributing to a reduction in carbon dioxide through photosynthesis and enriching the soil through biological nitrogen fixation. The plantations also provide suitable pasturage for the cattle and goats bred in the region for the milk production industry. Thus, the biomass initiative makes a viable contribution to development, mitigates the growth in concentrations of green house gases and carbon credits Tokyo Cement.
Commissioning the biomass power plant signals a paradigm shift in the company's methods of securing energy for production processes. The pioneering effort, which is eminently replicable by other industries, reflects continuous advancement in Tokyo Cement's environmental performance. We at Tokyo Cement believe that improvements to our environmental record can make a difference to society and to the efficiency of our core business practices.
